Scripture Union INTERNATIONAL

Scripture Union is an international organisation, represented in over 130 countries around the world. Engaging in broadly similar ministry, every local national division subscribes to a common set of aims, beliefs and working principles. Organisation structure is by way of seven regions of the world, our region being Britain and Ireland, comprising England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. Each of these local ministries is autonomous, is controlled by a local Council and led by a General Director.

Many of the SU national movements are in countries where they struggle to survive and yet perform a vital ministry. Less than 25 SU national organisations are in a position to provide financial support to others who otherwise would not survive.

As one of the wealthier regions of the world, the SU British and Irish region has undertaken to support work in Former Soviet Republics, a vast geographical area. Since perestroika in 1991, life has changed significantly in FSR and there is now more open, but not easy, opportunity for Christian witness.

Apart from financial support SU in Ireland are developing special links with SU work in Russia and Ukraine as follows:

• 2006, we sent a team to Volkhov (NE of St Petersburg) to run a children’s club and assess the feasibility of sending teams to partner in local SU activities and generally how best we can support them
• 2007, we sent a team to St Petersburg to work on the house at Murmanski Verota, used by SU Director Vera Juravliova for work with teenagers.
• 2008, we are planning two initiatives. Firstly to send a team back to Murmanski Verota to help with building of a second house and secondly a group of young people will hopefully travel to International Youth Camp in the Ukraine.
