HOLIDAY CLUBS

Largely funded until September 2007 by a substantial grant from the European Union under the Peace 2 Programme for Peace and Reconciliation, Scripture Union has run an exciting initiative comprising holiday clubs for children aged 5 to 15 running during July and August each year . A four year programme, it has now moved on to include a four week reconciliation programme for children aged 9 to 12 years in Primary Schools using a resource called ‘How we are dealing with difference’, produced by the Irish School of Ecumenics.

Scripture Union and EU Peace 2 Programme in partnership? Unlikely, you think, but it is true! The EU saw SU as a suitable partner in development of
Peace and Reconciliation among children aged 5 to 15 years

Holiday Clubs in some towns affected by the conflict in Northern Ireland
Scripturally based, these clubs attract anything from 40 to 120 local children from both Catholic and Protestant communities, engaging them in interactive games, crafts and fun activities. Each club runs for a week and is supported by the local community, benefiting from the use of community facilities such as schools and football pitches. These clubs have been highly successful in promoting mutual respect and community participation.

SUBC is supported by an Advisory Group chaired by Bishop Ken Clarke (Church of Ireland) and includes members from both Catholic and Protestant communities.
